There are few places anywhere that evoke that remote tropical island feel more than Lizard Island. It’s a 1 hour flight from Cairns, and around 20 kilometres off the Australian mainland, washed by the silky blue/green waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

But once you’ve landed and settled for a post-arrival drink, the crystal blue sea, china white sand and rustling palm trees will quickly lull you in to island time, and make you feel right at home.

The accommodation fans out around the curve of Anchor Bay, and is a mix of ocean-front, garden view and ridge top villas, rooms and suites, and a larger villa and private pavilion stay. Interiors are soft and soothing, with light fabrics flowing in the tropical breezes, a natural colour palette and easy textures.

Beachfront accommodations open on to private balconies with day beds, and most have a track down to the beach. Oceanview villas sit across a ridge top, with private balconies, some with a private plunge pool. The Gardenview rooms and suites are more private, tucked into the tropical gardens, but still easily accessing the beach.

The standalone Villa and Pavilion are a little more elegant, both sitting high above the ocean and very private. The Villa has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms - ideal for 2 couples travelling. The Pavilion is a perfect spot for a private getaway for 2. Both have their own plunge pools.

The Driftwood Bar and Wine Cellar is the place for an evening drink before moving on to the Salt Water restaurant for dinner. Other dining options include enjoying a private dinner on the beach, daytime picnics on beaches around the island, and the Marlin Bar - with a more casual bistro style - a short walk from the resort.

In addition to endless beach time and relaxing, other activities at Lizard Island include fishing (including sport fishing for marlin), diving and snorkelling, a walk to the Research Station, or wildlife and bird-watching. Relax for a few hours at the Essentia Day Spa, enjoying soothing treatments, massage, and beauty and water treatments.
