Sitting off the coast of northern Queensland, Orpheus Island is part of the Palm Island group and is close to the Great Barrier Reef and Hinchinbrook Island National Park. It also has a beautiful, secluded resort with space for just 28 guests. These include a selection of rooms, suites and villas. All are beachfront, with full or partial ocean views. All options also have luxurious bedding, a private terrace, complimentary mini-bar and a coffee machine. The suites and villas also have a separate lounge area. Some have 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, allowing a comfortable stay for 2 couples.
All meals are included in the rate with a delicious breakfast, tapas style lunch and fabulous degustation dinners. Fresh produce is sourced locally and from the resort gardens and local fish is supplied by nearby fishermen and markets. Join the communal tapas lunch each day, or you can order a hamper and head away to somewhere beautiful for a picnic. Guests have use of motorised dinghies to explore the island’s shoreline.
Dinner is also a shared event and is a nightly 4-course degustation menu that changes each day to match what foods and produce are available. Guests can request special meals if required, and most options are catered for.
After all that beautiful food there are plenty of activities to burn off the calories. Snorkelling, inshore fishing, paddle-boarding (SUPs), kayaking and sailing are all included in your stay. With sandy bays, clear water and a nearby fringing reef there is plenty to explore. Additional (paid) activities include diving, fishing and snorkelling out on the Great Barrier Reef, a short boat ride away. Other trips include a day out to Hinchinbrook or Pelorus Islands, cruises and helicopter flights.
Several eco-tours offer the chance to visit the island’s Reef Research Station, guided walking and snorkelling tours and the chance to do some research volunteering in the local ecosystems. And for a day of restoration take time out in the Gwandalan Spa, which offers an enchanting spa menu inspired by the local environment and Aboriginal rituals and stories.
Orpheus Island Lodge offers a fabulous stay for couples or several friends travelling together. With an all-inclusive rate it offers very good value for a special stay. The island is only accessible by helicopter transfer.
